Medicare open enrollment is upon us. As you pick the Medicare plan that works best for you and do your research, you will notice that there are several ways to enroll in Medicare. You can do it over the phone, in person at the Social Security Administration office, or online. The way you enroll is a matter of personal preference. Enrolling in Medicare online allows you to enroll at your convenience and is less costly than going to your local Social Security Office. Below is everything you need to know about enrolling in Medicare online.
Enroll Through the Social Security Website
While Medicare has its own website, you will enroll in Medicare through the Social Security Website. To enroll, visit the Social Security Administration website. Click on ‘Menu’ at the top of the page. Many options and services will appear.
Under Benefits, Medicare will be the third option. By clicking on it you will be taken to a page about Medicare. On the Medicare page, there will be a button to enroll in Medicare. Click on this button to begin your Medicare enrollment process. Note, this is only for people enrolling in Medicare, not Social Security. If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare.
Have Documentation Available
You will need to have certain documents available to you as you go through the enrollment process. These documents will include your Driver’s License and Birth Certificate. If you immigrated to the United States, you will need to have your proof of residency available. After your application is complete, you may be asked for employment or past insurance information such as a W-2 form. You will not need that information when initially enrolling in Medicare.
Stop and Start as You Need
Enrolling online gives you the leisure that the phone and in-person enrollment options don’t give you. You are able to save your progress and return to it at a later time. By enrolling online, you are able to look over your application to make sure all of the information is correct before submitting it.
Enroll Somewhere Secure
When you enroll in Medicare, you are sharing a lot of private information. It’s important that you are filling out your application somewhere with secure internet to avoid your information getting stolen or your computer hacked. Your personal privacy is important. Be careful and don’t fill out your Medicare application in a public place. Fill out the application in your home or with a licensed insurance broker.
