Is it Worth it to Get Vision Insurance?

When you think of insurance, what comes to mind? Your health, right? Of course, it can be scary living without health insurance. You can be one accident or illness away from a terrible hospital bill. It seems like a no-brainer to find a way to get health insurance, but what about vision insurance? Most of us aren’t walking around with 20/20 vision, so isn’t vision insurance important too?

Without our eyesight, we cannot function as easily or complete the day-to-day tasks we’re accustomed to doing. If your eyes are starting to see things in a blurrier fashion, it can be hard to do your job, drive a car, or order from a menu.
When getting health insurance through an employer or the marketplace, many add on dental and life insurance. However, many people wonder if it’s worth it to get vision insurance, especially if their eyesight is good.
Vision insurance offers more than you think it does and as an insurance agency in Jacksonville, Florida, our team at Thomas & Associates wanted to share with you some benefits/reasons to have vision insurance.

Reasons to Get Vision Insurance

Regular eye exams are like physical exams – they’re preventative care. This regular exam can help the doctor identify if there are any changes in your eyes, if you need your vision correction, or if you have the early stages of an eye disease like glaucoma or cataracts.

An eye doctor can also detect some signs of other medical problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, high cholesterol, and some cancers.

Vision plans usually pay a portion of eye exams, vision tests, eyeglass lenses, contact lenses, eyeglass frames, scratch-resistant coating for lenses. Some plans have discounts for correct eye surgery or coverage for disposable lenses.
At Thomas & Associates, we can offer you a combination Dental, Vision, and Hearing (DVH) plan. The DVH plan provides a $1,000 or $1,500 per year policy maximum benefit. It’s a guaranteed acceptance plan with no health questions. You get to choose any optometrist, dentist, or audiologist and you can even get a low deductible of $100.

This plan will cover some things immediately, such as fillings, dental diagnostic exams, and eye exams. Other types of treatment require a waiting period of three to 12 months. After six months, coverage for eyeglasses and contact lenses will start.

The policy will provide an increasing percentage paid for non-major services, which starts at 60% for the first year, then 70% after the first year and 80% after the second year.

A DVH policy is designed for those ages 18 to 89 with no coverage or limited coverage. The individual may be on Medicare or may have an individual health insurance policy.

Do you need a vision insurance plan?

The DVH plan is a great choice for anybody wanting to add full vision coverage (and also dental and hearing) to Medicare or an individual health insurance plan. Even if you currently do not have vision problems, preventative exams can keep you healthy throughout the year and even catch something early.
